イタリアン・マフィアの下っ端組員ジョーイの仕事は、犯罪に使われた銃の後始末。ある日、麻薬取引現場で警官を射殺してしまった危険な拳銃の処分を命じられる。しかし自宅の地下に隠し置いていたその銃を、隣に住む息子の親友オレグが持ち帰ってしまう。しかも暴力を振るう義父に向けて発砲し、そのまま銃と一緒に行方をくらましてしまう。もし今度の発砲事件で銃から足がついたらジョーイは一巻の終わり。慌てて銃の行方を追い始めるが、オレグの父親がロシアン・マフィアと関係があったことから、警察に加え、イタリア系、ロシア系双方のマフィアからも追いつめられる羽目に・・・。
「ワイルド・スピード」のポール・ウォーカーが、犯罪に使われた銃の後始末を命じられ窮地に陥るチンピラを演じる痛快サスペンス・アクション。監督はウェイン・クラマー。共演はキャメロン・ブライト、チャズ・パルミンテリなど。

Lions and tigers and pimps, oh my! In the gleefully violent "Running Scared," the writer and director Wayne Kramer tries to go over the rainbow and put a self-consciously bloody spin on once upon a time. As in: once upon a hard-boiled time, there was a not-so-wise guy from New Jersey, Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker), who, when he wasn't taking care of his own family, was punching the clock, among other things, for his mob family. When the spooky kid next door, Oleg (professional spooky kid Cameron Bright), steals one of his guns, Joey gives chase into a long night crammed with tortured camera angles and creepy crawlers. The idea here is meta-movie to the max, a deconstructed modern action flick by way of the brothers Grimm, in which few live happily ever after, and most don't even make it to the next day. As a writer, Mr. Kramer may have fashioned a genre-busting screenplay, one that has its postmodern cake and eats it, too, but as a director he proves himself as blood simple, if generally less adept, as any Hollywood hire.

By the time the final showdown with the bad guys comes around, Crockett and Tubbs have long since crossed the line that divides the professional from the personal. But in the world of Michael Mann a guiding creative force behind the small-screen “Miami Vice” and the writer and director of this movie version no such line really exists. Whatever their particular jobs, his major characters tend to be men whose commitment to their professions transcends mere workaholism and becomes an all-consuming, almost operatic passion. With “Miami Vice” Mr. Mann clearly had money to burn, and the flames are beautiful to behold. Mixing pop savvy with startling formal ambition, Mr. Mann transforms what is essentially a long, fairly predictable cop-show episode into a dazzling (and sometimes daft) Wagnerian spectacle. He fuses music, pulsating color and high drama into something that is occasionally nonsensical and frequently sublime. “Miami Vice” is an action picture for people who dig experimental art films, and vice versa.

Digressions on Bond, Hitchcock and a 50's cartoon character called the Schmoo are among the trivial pursuits squeezed into this shallow, dandified grandson of "Pulp Fiction." A mildly entertaining jigsaw puzzle of mistaken identity and revenge, the movie begins with a jarring rat-a-tat of four gory murders, then spends the rest of its time assembling its pieces into a semi-coherent picture. Josh Hartnett, as Slevin, stumbles through the movie with a broken nose and his shirt off much of the time, and is the only one of the five male stars who doesn't wear the smirk of a prankster playing an elaborate practical joke at our expense. Besides the director Paul McGuigan ("Wicker Park") and the screenwriter Jason Smilovic, the other major conspirators include Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci and Bruce Willis. Lucy Liu skips in and out of the movie as a smart, sexy coroner who hooks up with Slevin. It would be unfair to give away the story's final revelation except to say that early on, "Lucky Number Slevin" cheats with a deliberately misleading flashback. Were the truth revealed, there would be no movie. That fundamental deception lends "Lucky Number Slevin" a slightly sour aftertaste.

A poster for the period drama “Hollywoodland” says that “dying in Hollywood can make you a legend.” George Reeves would have been flattered. A two-bit talent who is the film’s nominal reason for being, Mr. Reeves is best remembered, if at all, for two things: playing Superman on TV, and a bullet in the head. His death in 1959 was ruled a suicide, but the movies love a tasty murder, which is why Ben Affleck has packed on the pounds, slipped on some tights and given this exasperating film far more than it gives in return. The director Allen Coulter and the screenwriter Paul Bernbaum want to bend Mr. Reeves’s biography as an actor-cum-gigolo into a tragedy, and Mr. Affleck is more than up to the task. But half of “Hollywoodland” also involves a dead-end pseudo-noir about another hustler, a private eye named Louis Simo, whom Adrien Brody fails to shape into a character of interest despite much aggressive eyebrow raising. Hired to investigate the Reeves death, Simo subsequently enters on a journey that distractingly toggles between his life and that of the dead man, and involves feeling and healing, fathers and sons and an occasional knuckle sandwich.

密室を舞台に、幼い少女に追い詰められていく中年男の恐怖を描くサスペンス・スリラー。監督は本作が長編デビューとなるデヴィッド・スレイド。出演はパトリック・ウィルソン、エレン・ペイジなど。

More sour than hard, this highfalutin exploitation flick starts with an unsavory premise — possible pedophile meets the jailbait of his dreams — that quickly becomes downright unpalatable. Working from an expository, intellectually clotted script by the playwright Brian Nelson, the director David Slade opens his first feature with his camera trained on a computer monitor. There, a teasing pas de deux is unfolding between two Internet chatters, Thonggrrrrrl14 and Lensman319. She's young, precocious and seemingly as eager as he is. They arrange to meet, silent alarms screaming. From the chocolate smeared on her mouth and the rich color of her crimson sweatshirt, it initially looks as if Thonggrrrrrl14 is about to meet the big bad wolf in the person of her chat-room pickup, Jeff (Patrick Wilson), a photographer nearly two decades her senior. But this little red-hooded miss, a saucer-eyed pixie called Hayley Stark (Ellen Page), soon proves very wily, and more schooled by Lara Croft than Mother Goose. During the ensuing narrative unpleasantness and visual incoherence, Hayley subjects Jeff to a range of torture, all in the name of, well, what? Despite the two fine performances, it's hard to say. Viewers who find torture entertaining, even in the age of Abu Ghraib, may find this watchable.

In his genre pastiche “The Good German,” Steven Soderbergh has tried to resurrect the magic of classical Hollywood, principally by sucking out all the air, energy and pleasure from his own filmmaking. Based on the well-regarded Joseph Kanon novel, this film stars a distracted, emotionally detached George Clooney as Jake Geismer, an American journalist who, following World War II, returns to Germany to check out the doings at Potsdam and find his lost love, Lena, played by a vamping Cate Blanchett. As it turns out, they don’t make them like they used to even when they try. The most striking difference between "The Good German" and a Hollywood film like “Casablanca” aren’t the expletives, the new film’s calculated cynicism or even a glimpse of bedroom coupling; it’s that the older film feels as if it was made for the satisfaction of the audience while the other feels as if it was made for that of the director alone. “The Good German” feels like the product of a filmmaker far more interested in his own handicraft than in the audience for whom he’s ostensibly creating that work.

There are almost as many films fighting in “The Departed” as there are guys slugging it out. First among those films is Martin Scorsese’s cubistic entertainment about men divided by power, loyalty and their own selves. Hovering above that film like a shadow is “Infernal Affairs,” the equally sleek Hong Kong assemblage on which it is based and which serves as one of its myriad doubles. And then there is the film conjured up by Jack, as in Jack Nicholson, who when not serving Mr. Scorsese’s interests with a monstrous leer all but subverts those interests with a greedy, devouring hunger. Compared with his last fictional outings, the period story “Gangs of New York” and the Howard Hughes portrait “The Aviator,” this work feels as light as a feather, or as light as any divertissement from a major filmmaker who funnels his ambitions through genre. What helps make “The Departed” at once a success and a relief isn’t that Mr. Scorsese is back on the mean streets where he belongs; what’s at stake here is the film and the filmmaking, not the director’s epic importance.

"Brick," a flashy cinematic stunt perpetrated by Rian Johnson, dispenses with the adolescent gibberish of the here and now to graft the hard-boiled argot of Dashiell Hammett onto an upscale Southern California high school: the milieu of "Beverly Hills 90210" and "The O.C." goes noir. In a twisty plot that proudly borrows elements from "The Maltese Falcon," "Red Harvest" and other Hammett yarns, Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a teenage Bogart-as-Sam Spade minus the trench coat and fedora, digs into a roiling adolescent underworld of murder and drug dealing. It's all so seamy, sordid, lurid and shocking! And dull, despite a noirish gloss of wide-angle cinematography and a jaundiced, smoggy color scheme. "Brick" was duly awarded the Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision in 2005. Its raw ambition certainly puts it near the head of its class in contemporary teenage dramas. But what does that mean in a genre dominated by C students and worse?

The union of Brian De Palma and the murdered woman known as the Black Dahlia should have been a marriage made in movie heaven or, preferably, hell. A master of modern horror, Mr. De Palma has a flair for the frenzy of violence, specifically when visited on the female body, which makes him seem an ideal fit for this spectacularly cruel crime. At their finest, his films are marvels of virtuosity, alive to the contradictory, at times disreputable pleasures of the movies. Blood runs through his work, but so does juicy life. In "The Black Dahlia," though, that life has been drained from the filmmaking, much as the blood was drained from the victim's body. Mr. De Palma can be a director of dazzling creative lunacy, but there's little craziness in this restrained, awkward film.
